This largely underground house near Lake Tekapo fits seamlessly into the landscape. It will be linked via a tunnel to a future aircraft hangar, also underground. The one large glazed façade is orientated away from Mt John observatory to reduce any impact light escaping at night, in this internationally renowned “dark sky” area.
The construction is concrete which is exposed throughout the inside, and what parts of the building are not underground are covered by surrounding tussock.
